SVA's Pre-College Program is designed for high school students who want to enhance their creative skills, learn more about a particular field of art, develop a portfolio, and/or experience the challenges and triumphs that exist at one of the most dynamic colleges. In courses taught by the same faculty of leading art professionals who teach in the undergraduate degree program of the college, students will explore the fundamentals of art & design at a level not readily available in high school.

Students will receive one college credit for successful completion of the Saturday program and three credits for the successful completion of the summer program.

The fall and spring programs are open to all students who will be enrolled in high school at the time of the program. The summer program is open to all students who will be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school in the fall of 2012. Space is limited to approximately 20 students per course.

Determination of SVA Closings Due to Inclement Weather Conditions
During the winter months, it is sometimes necessary for the College to suspend classes temporarily on short notice. Severe weather can create hazardous travel conditions throughout the region that make it difficult or impossible for members of the SVA community to get to campus safely. Although such cases are rare and typically effect operations for no more than a day, you may find it helpful to have a few guidelines about weather-related closings so that you can plan accordingly.

*The Determination to Close*
Once severe weather is predicted, SVA officials closely monitor the storm warnings and directives issued by New York City Office of Emergency Management as well as guidelines provided by mass transit authorities, including the MTA, Metro North, Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit. If you learn from a major media outlet that New York City Public Schools have closed or are closing for the day, assume that SVA will also. Note that SVA makes the determination one day at a time.

*Be Prepared*
Because it can be difficult to predict the severity of a storm even 24 hours before it hits, SVA officials may make the determination to close the College just a few hours in advance.

*Stay Informed*
To find out if SVA is closing:
*Check SVA's Web site, www.sva.edu
*Call SVA's main phone number, 212.592.2000
*Tune in to television and radio news: Channels 1, 2, 4, 5 and 11, and WCBS 880 AM
All of the above are reliable sources of information after 6am on the day severe weather hits.

Fall and Spring Program Refunds
Refunds are available if a written or emailed request to officially withdraw is submitted to the Office of Admissions. Failure to complete a course does not constitute an official withdrawal, nor does notifying the instructor, nor does lack of attendance. Fall and Spring tuition refunds will be issued according to the following schedules:

  • Before the first class session - 100% of tuition
  • Before the second class session - 90% of tuition
  • Before the third class session - 80% of tuition
  • There will be no refunds for withdrawals after the third class session.
