Distinguished Alumnus Lecture: Gail Anderson

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 7pm
Amphitheater
209 East 23 Street

The Alumni Society of School of Visual Arts (SVA) welcomes Gail Anderson (BFA 1984 Graphic Design) as part of the Distinguished Alumnus Lecture Series. Anderson is the creative director of design at SpotCo, a New York-based design studio and ad agency specializing in entertainment graphics and theatrical advertising. SpotCo, which in August agreed to be acquired by the British media and entertainment company First Artist, has created the campaigns for Broadway hit shows including August: Osage County, Rent and Avenue Q. Previously, Anderson was senior art director at Rolling Stone magazine. The event takes place on Tuesday, October 14, 7pm, at SVA, 209 East 23 Street. Admission is free.

Gail Anderson has been recognized by the leading professional organizations in her field, including the Art Directors Club, the Society of Publication Designers and the Type Directors Club, and she is the recipient of the 2008 lifetime achievement award from AIGA, design’s highest honor. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum and the Library of Congress. Anderson is co-author, with Steven Heller, of Graphic Wit: The Art of Humor in Design (Watson-Guptill), The Savage Mirror: The Art of Contemporary Caricature (Watson-Guptill), American Typeplay (Pbc), The Designers Guide to Astounding Photoshop Effects (North Light), New Vintage Type: Classic Fonts for the Digital Age (Watson-Guptill) and the forthcoming Ornamental Type. Anderson serves on the advisory boards for Adobe Partners in Design and the Society of Publication Designers, and teaches in the MFA Design Department at SVA.

Earlier this year Anderson was commissioned by SVA to create the latest poster in the College’s long-running subway campaign. Her design, a colorful tribute to free thinking that displays her signature command of type (“If someone says you shouldn’t, ask them who should,” it reads), is up at more than 200 subway platforms around the city.
