| Honors Program Annual Lecture: Street Art |

This panel discussion organized by the Honors Program at SVA brings together five New York City-based artists and observers for a conversation about the state of street art today: Marc and Sara Schiller, Wooster Collective; Thomas Beale, Honey Space; and ELBOW-TOE, street artist. The panelists will discuss the history of street art, how art and business have blurred on the city streets, and what recent mainstream attention means for the art form: Is it a blessing or a curse? The discussion will be moderated by artist and SVA faculty member Amy Wilson.
Sara and Marc Schiller are New York-based curators and the founders of Wooster Collective, whose mission is to document ephemeral art experiences via salons, gallery shows and the Web site, www.woostercollective.com, which showcases street art from around the world. Roberta Smith of The New York Times praised the Schillers’ groundbreaking 2006 exhibition at 11 Spring Street, New York, as “one of the best shows of the season.”
Thomas Beale, a New-York based sculptor, operates Honey Space, an independent public exhibition space in Chelsea, where the exhibition “Portrait of Sylvia Elena” was recently presented, featuring a collaborative installation by noted street artists Swoon and Tennessee Jane Watson.
SVA instructor Frank Anselmo (BFA Advertising and Graphic Design Department) teaches the course "Unconventional: Guerilla Advertising," which received the Gold Pencil for Innovative Advertising award at the One Show College Competition. He is an art director at BBDO New York, where he has worked on accounts for Guinness, FedEx, Ebay and HBO. Anselmo made headlines with a campaign for The Sopranos featuring arms hanging out of the trunks of New York City taxis.
ELBOW-TOE is a Brooklyn-based artist that has been active in the street art scene for the past 4 years. His work, while mainly figurative, varies wildly in style and technique, though his primary methods for work on the street are wheatpasted woodcuts, stencils and large scale charcoal drawings. His work, included in several gallery shows in London and New York, will be featured in an upcoming two person exhibition at Thinkspace gallery in Los Angeles along with the Danish street artist Armsrock.
Amy Wilson (BFA 1995 Fine Arts) is a New York-based artist and educator. Her current exhibition, recently reviewed in The New Yorker, is on view at Bravin Lee Programs in Chelsea through October 18. She teaches in the BFA Fine Arts, Art History and BFA Visual and Critical Studies departments at SVA.
