Computer art is by nature evolutionary, relying on rapid changes in technology and software for the substance of its creative work, with so many traditional disciplines integrating digital technologies the lines between traditional works of art and new media works continue to blur. Defining computer art by its end product is difficult- the finished work can exist as an image, sound, animation, video, algorithm, CD, DVD, performance or as installation art. Perhaps a better definition can be found with the creator, an artist who uses the computer as his or her primary tool.
Students in our graduate computer art program have a wide variety of backgrounds and come from around the world to study at SVA. The international student body provides unique perspectives in seminar critiques and gives students insight to different cultural approaches to the creative process.
The MFA Computer Art program- the first of its kind in the United States- is continually redefining itself the through the ongoing discovery of new creative uses for today's technology. The faculty is a who's who of computer artists in New York, composed of recognized professionals and internationally renowned artists. Our Digital Arts Seminar series, visiting artists program, Webcast panel discussions and guest lecturers provide students with a wide range of perspectives on digital art.
The success of our program is best described as a "tradition of excellence". Awards have been bestowed upon our students by every major international computer art competition including the Student Academy Awards, Inter-Society for Electronic Arts, SIGGRAPH Electronic Theater and Art Show, Prix Ars Electronica, Smithsonian American Art Museum, New York Digital Salon, Cannes Film Festival, Sundance Online Film Festival and the Leonardo Award for Excellence.
Our Graduates are employed by the most prestigious studios and art institutions, including Industrial Light & Magic, Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks, Warner Brothers, Pacific Data Images, Rhythm & Hues, Blue Sky, Digital Domain, MTC, Electronic Arts, Eyebeam, Nickelodeon online, The Wall Street Journal Online and the American Museum of Natural History. Others choose the entrepreneurship of their own businesses or fine arts careers. Graduates of the program exhibit their work in galleries and museums such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, P.S.1/MoMA, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Millennium Museum in Beijing.
The goal of the program is to develop artist who will produce significant creative work throughout their careers.

The truth is that I love teaching. The students at SVA are so eager to learn that really I learn more from my students than I could ever give them.
