  • Where is the Office of Graduate Admissions?
Graduate Admissions does not have a public office. You may e-mail gradadmissions@sva.edu or call the office at 212.592.2107 if you have questions about the application process. Please contact the department of your desired program if you have questions about the graduate program curriculum, courses, instructors or technology. We strongly encourage applicants to visit their prospective department prior to submitting their application materials. You must contact the department directly to find out about tours or appointments that may be available. For a complete list of the contact information for each graduate department, please click here.
  • What are the tuition and fees of each graduate program?
To review a complete list of tuition and fees, please click here.
  • How can I find out about current events at SVA?
To sign up to receive SVA’s monthly e-calendar and the Visual Arts Briefs weekly e-mail newsletter, please click here.

APPLICATION QUESTIONS

  • Can I apply to more than one program?
No. You may only apply to one graduate program per year. If you are unsure about which program to apply for, we recommend that you attend the information sessions and contact each department to identify which program is the best fit for you.
  • Can I apply to the spring semester?
No. Entry into SVA’s graduate programs takes place in the fall semester only.
  • Is there a paper application?
No. All graduate applicants are required to complete the online application form and submit the non-refundable $80 application fee using a credit card. To begin the online application process, please click here.

Please note: The online application is not officially submitted until valid credit card information has been supplied. Upon completion of this, an online confirmation is sent. We strongly recommend that applicants print this out and keep it with their records.
  • I submitted a graduate application in a previous year. Are my documents still on file?
No. Graduate Admissions does not hold onto application files or materials from previous years. You must submit a new application, pay a new application fee, and resubmit all materials to the Office of Graduate Admissions by the appropriate deadline.
  • I am currently enrolled in a graduate program at a different institution. Can I transfer credits?
In terms of transfer credits, applicants need to apply to the program and be accepted before the Graduate Committee would evaluate transcripts for possible transfer credits. Applicants are encouraged to include a note with their application letting the Committee know that they would like their transcripts to be considered for transfer credits.
  • Does SVA provide letter of recommendation forms?
No. SVA does not have a standard form for recommendation letters. Applicants should ask their reviewers to write a letter on school or company letterhead, seal it in an envelope, sign it across the seal, and send it to you to include with your application materials package.
  • How can I submit my application materials?
All required application materials (except the online application and application fee) must be received together in one package by the Office of Graduate Admissions. Materials may be sent by mail or submitted in person to the Admissions Office.

Submissions by Mail: Due to the high volume of applications and mail received on a daily basis and the time it takes to process, the Office of Graduate Admissions cannot conduct status checks via phone, fax, or e-mail. Applicants are encouraged to submit materials via a trackable method (such as certified mail, priority mail, UPS, etc.) and use those tracking numbers to follow-up on their own. All materials should be sent to:
    Office of Graduate Admissions
    School of Visual Arts
    209 East 23rd Street
    New York, NY 10010-3994

Submissions In Person: If you are in the New York area, you may drop off your materials in person to the main Admissions Office located on the first floor of the 209 East 23rd Street building (between second and third Avenues). The office is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
  • I was accepted to a graduate program in a previous year, but did not attend. Is my acceptance still valid?
No. Admission into the graduate programs cannot be deferred to another academic year. Applicants who delay enrollment must reapply to the program by submitting a new application and fee, and resubmitting all application materials. Keep in mind that being accepted to a program in the past bears no indication that an applicant will be accepted again as applicant pools change every year.
  • When will I receive an admission decision?
Applicants who have completed the application process by January 15, 2010, will receive an admission decision, in writing, by April 1, 2010. The College does not disclose admissions decisions via phone, fax or e-mail. All admission decision letters are sent to the “mailing address” provided by applicants on the online application. To avoid delays in notification, applicants who move or change addresses during the application process should contact Graduate Admissions via e-mail gradadmissions@sva.edu with an update of their contact information.

REQUIREMENTS

  • My undergraduate degree was not earned in an artistic discipline. Am I still eligible to apply?
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university. SVA's Graduate Program applicants do come from a variety of degree programs (BFA, BA, BS, etc.), but they all are expected to have strong, competitive portfolios and academic backgrounds. Some departments may require specific coursework and/or technical proficiency. Please refer to the “Portfolio and Department Requirements” sections for more information.
  • English is not my primary language. Do I need to prove my English proficiency?
Yes. For more information about the types of English proficiency exams and the scores required, please click here.

  • I completed/am in the process of completing my undergraduate degree at an institution outside the United States. How do I know if I am eligible to apply for graduate study?
Applicants who have attended institutions outside of the United States must prove that their educational background is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Transcripts must be evaluated by AACRAO, ECE or WES . For more information about this requirement, please click here.

FINANCIAL

  • I am an international applicant. Can I apply for financial aid?
No. Only citizens and permanent residents of the United States are eligible for need-based financial aid.
  • Does SVA offer scholarships and assistantships to graduate students?
Yes. Scholarships are awarded to qualified new students after acceptance to certain graduate degree programs. Students may apply for assistantships once they have entered the program. These awards are based upon individual merit and performance and vary by department. All applicants are encouraged to do their own research into outside scholarships and other sources of funding.
  • Is there a form that graduate students must fill out in order to be considered for scholarship?
No. There are merit-based partial tuition scholarships offered by each graduate department. All applicants are automatically evaluated for these scholarships during the review process.
  • Can graduate applicants apply for the Silas H. Rhodes scholarship?
No. This scholarship is only offered to applicants applying to an undergraduate program at SVA.

All enrollment fees and housing deposits should be sent to the Office of Graduate Admissions. These payments are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis as space remains available.

No. Admission cannot be deferred to another academic year. Applicants who delay enrollment must reapply to the program by submitting a new application and fee, and resubmitting all application materials.
