Reception: Wednesday, July 8, 6 - 8pm Exploring cultural and individual identity, the works in this exhibition are by 11 students and alumni from the BFA Photography and MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Departments at SVA and 16 students and alumni from the American University of Dubai. The exhibition will travel to the Empty Quarter Gallery in Dubai in September. Curated by Stephen Frailey, chair of the BFA Photography Department at SVA, and Roberto Lopardo, chair of the Visual Communication Program and assistant professor of photography at the American University in Dubai. The film screening and panel discussion will take place in the 3rd-floor amphitheater of 209 East 23 Street.

A New Currency

Reception: Tuesday, July 14, 6 - 8pm Organized by a group of recent graduates of the MFA Fine Arts Department, this exhibition originated as a response to the changing economic circumstances faced by the art community. As part of a larger effort to rethink art's relationship to systems of exchange, the organizers invited artists outside New York to stage their own exhibitions, performances or research during the months of May and June. The results of the offshoot exhibitions in Miami, St. Louis, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Taipei and Seoul, documented through photographs, announcement cards, press clips and video, will be displayed alongside works from the New York iteration of “A New Currency.”

S-BANDS
June 22 - July 12 The New York Digital Salon presents an exhibition of creative work by Sherban Epure. Based on mathematical principles, the S-Band is a two-dimensional modular structure that can be produced in numerous variations. Documenting Epure’s transition from traditional to digital techniques, the exhibition includes over 60 digital images on canvas, early work in traditional media, recent animated work and a retrospective video that documents his artistic career.

Our City In Depth: Exploring the New York Environment in Stereoscopic 3D
August 24 - September 18
Reception: Friday, September 11, 6 - 8pm Including images of the 23rd Street area of New York, this exhibition features 3D photography by artist Gerald Marks taken over a span of 40 years. Making use of a wide variety of stereoscopic displays, the exhibition also includes 3D photographs of a collaborative environmental art project combining dance, architecture and archaeology that Marks created in summer 2008 using a shared grant from the iLAND organization. Marks is a faculty member in the MFA Computer Art Department.

Basically Human Panel Discussion
Wednesday, July 8, 5 - 6pm Accompanying the exhibition “Basically Human,” a panel of artists will discuss their work on display in the SVA Gallery. The artists from the BFA Photography Department at SVA are alumnus Nicola Kast (BFA 2007 Photography) and current students Philip Moy and Kyle Ganson. The artists from the American University in Dubai are Mona Ayyash, Sami Al Turki and Cima Azzam. Predictable, but Fun
Thursday, July 2, 6 - 7:30pm Investigating love and marriage through the lens of our technology-embedded culture, this documentary is about wedding-gown designers in Israel and Palestine. While their lives and art differ notably, they have similar conversations with their clients and use similar technological platforms to conduct business. The movie explores how the Internet changes the way we understand intimacy, the role of technology in our lives and how digital platforms are used in our daily communication. Transit Dubai
Wednesday, July 8, 4:30pm Presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Basically Human,” this film explores the changing face of Dubai through the photography of four students from the American University of Dubai. With promises of economic opportunity, personal liberties and material abundance, the city has attracted a unique population, with more than 80 percent of its inhabitants being temporary immigrants from Europe, Asia, America and other areas of the Middle East. Sami Al Turki and Arezu Karoobi, two of the students whose work is featured in the film, are displaying their work in the accompanying exhibition in the SVA Gallery. Directed by Ineke Smits, Transit Dubai won the audience award at the 7th edition of the Gdansk Doc Film Festival in Poland in April 2009. 209 East 23 Street, 3rd-floor amphitheater Free and open to the public
