SVA presents artist booth and two lectures at the 2008 Affordable Art Fair
School of Visual Arts (SVA), in conjunction with The Affordable Art Fair (AAF), will present two panel discussions for new and experienced collectors of contemporary art, which will cover such issues as buying art as an investment, doing research and specializing in various media. On Thursday, June 12, 7pm, Michael Foley, owner of Foley Gallery will moderate a panel entitled In Focus: Collecting Photography. On Saturday, June 14, 2pm, author Lisa Hunter will lead a discussion entitled Top 10 Tips for Starting Your Collection. Admission to each program is free with AAF admission. Both programs take place at The Affordable Art Fair at the Altman Building/Metropolitan Pavilion, lower level, located at 135 West 18th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues), New York City.

Panelists for In Focus: Collecting Photography include: Amy Stein, photographer; Jen Bekman, gallerist, Jen Bekman Gallery, New York; Michelle Dunn, deputy director, Aperture; Michael Foley, owner, Foley Gallery, New York (moderator)

Panelists for Top 10 Tips for Starting Your Collection include: Tom Delavan, editor at large, Domino magazine; George Billis, gallerist, George Billis Gallery, New York; Lisa Hunter, author, The Intrepid Art Collector: The Beginner’s Guide to Finding, Buying, and Appreciating Art on a Budget (Three Rivers Press, 2006) (moderator)

School of Visual Arts is also participating in AAF as an exhibitor. The College will show new and recent work in a range of media by 11 artists who are students or recent alumni of SVA. Participating artists include: Liz Cosby (MFA Fine Arts); Thaddeus Dryja (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media); Michael Cody Drury (MFA Fine Arts); Daniel John Gadd (BFA Fine Arts); Ben Handzo (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media); Allison Kaufman (MFA Photography, Video and Related Media); Avery McCarthy (BFA Fine Arts); Sean Basil McGiver (MPS Digital Photography); David Mramor (MFA Fine Arts); John Solis (BFA Illustration); and Matt White (MFA Fine Arts).

"Figuration: Emblem or Allegory," a booth with work by MFA students from five metropolitan graduate school programs, will highlight emerging talent from Columbia University School of the Arts, Hunter College, Parsons the New School of Design, Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Arts. SVA artists include: Brendan Austin (MPS Digital Photography); Baishian Bai (MFA Fine Arts); Nick Lascot (BFA Fine Arts); Jenny Morgan (MFA Fine Arts); and Kevin Regan (MFA Fine Arts). Selected by artist and independent curator Dan Halm, "Figuration: Emblem or Allegory" explores the figure as it exists either in presence or in absence ? as a visible symbol representing the human form or as an extended metaphor.

The Affordable Art Fair (AAF) is held at the Altman Building / Metropolitan Pavilion, at 135 West 18th Street, New York. AAF hours are: Thursday, June 12, 12pm-9pm; Friday, June 13, 12pm-8pm; Saturday, June 14, 12pm-8pm; Sunday, June 15, 12pm-5pm. General admission is $17/day, $12/day for students and seniors, $10/day with a group discount. Children under 12 are admitted free of charge, and fathers will be admitted free when they attend with their children on Father's Day, June 15.

The Affordable Art Fair (AAF) makes the art world accessible to thousands of visitors each year with a selection of contemporary art in all media under $10,000. The Fair attracts new collectors, designers, architects and young urban professionals to discover and buy paintings, drawings, sculptures, video, photography and limited edition prints. AAF launched in London in 1999 and has since expanded to Sydney, Melbourne, Bristol and New York. This year the Fair will host more than 70 galleries from the US, Europe, Asia, Canada and South America.
