In leaves no step had trodden black

July 6 - 20, 2010
Reception: Tuesday, July 6, 6-8pm

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “In leaves no step had trodden black,” an exhibition of work by selected alumni of the BFA Photography Department. The exhibition is curated by faculty member Eric Weeks.

Borrowing a line from the well-known Robert Frost poem “The Road Not Taken,” the title of the exhibition suggests the innumerable possibilities of implying narrative with photography, as well as the choices each exhibiting artist has made in their use of the medium. Implied narrative can be constructed, found or merely hinted at through the artist’s process.

“All photographs have the uncanny ability to convey some type of story,” explains Weeks. “The most common method is time-based, when a photograph suggests either an action in the moment, one that has just taken place or one that is about to. Sometimes, though, the narrative revolves around questions concerning the photographer’s motivations, rather than the subject of the photograph. Why did the photographer decide to show the subject in this manner? What was his or her thought progression?”

The exhibiting artists are Tracey Baran, Ted Barron, Monica Bradley, Jesse Chan, Lisa Elmaleh, Nicholas Fevelo, Brian Finke, Lauren Fleishman, Ayala Gazit, Sean Gutowski. Barclay Hughes, Danny Kim, Matt Kushan, Greg Miller, Katie Murray, Orit Raff, Grant W. Ray, Katie Nicole Smith, Christina Thurston, Corinne Wilber and Richard Williamson.

Students in the BFA Photography Department are immersed in all aspects of commercial and fine art photography, giving them a better understanding of various genres, ideas and vocabularies. With access to cutting-edge facilities - as well as a 100-plus faculty of photographers, museum directors, critics, art directors, photo editors and photography collectors - students are able to cultivate their own sensibility and visual style.
