 More and Less

January 15 - February 6, 2010
Reception: Tuesday, January 19, 5-7pm

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “More and Less,” an exhibition of sculpture and photography by current students that examines perception and the boundaries between representation and abstraction.  The exhibition is curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries.

Composed from simple studio refuse including felt, wire and paper cups, Ross Berry’s sculptures fit in the palm of your hand. Working in the tradition of Richard Tuttle and John Chamberlain, the artist uses free association to combine material, color and form to create his casual yet highly resolved abstract sculptures. Berry is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.

In his Dark series, John Cyr pushes three silver gelatin prints to a point of maximum readable density - just short of total black - in order to force upon the viewer a moment of image discovery. The extremely subtle tonal range of the photographs makes accurate reproduction nearly impossible. Cyr is a student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.

Jong Oh employs gravity, tension and shadow to create deceptively simple sculptures. Using string, rubber bands and wood fragments, the artist fashions basic geometric forms with a rigorous eye for balance and harmony. Oh is a student in the MFA Fine Arts Department.

Created from satellite photographs, Adam Ryder’s large scale digital prints reveal the formal patterns of transportation infrastructure within the urban landscape. The artist’s reductive process highlights the influence of roadways on urban planning and draws parallels to biological networks such as the nervous system. Ryder is a student in the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.
