 Counterbalance

February 13 - March 20, 2010
Reception: Wednesday, March 3, 5-7pm

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Counterbalance,” an exhibition of work by students in the MPS Art Therapy Department and the clients with whom they work at their internship sites. The exhibition is curated by Liz DelliCarpini, internship coordinator, MPS Art Therapy Department.

Students work at internships in and around New York City, including Bellevue Hospital Center, the New York City Public School System, NYU Medical Center and Rikers Island. For this exhibition, students created artwork in response to client work, illustrating the non-verbal interaction between client and therapist. The multimedia work on display explores the paradoxical relationship between structure and freedom inherent in the creative process. Art therapists constantly work to balance these two extremes because an individual’s potential for creative expression can be enhanced or silenced by decisions regarding art materials, subject matter and the parameters of the therapeutic relationship. Given the opportunity to experience their creative potential, clients learn a healthier way of dealing with their emotions and being in the world.

Deborah Farber, chair of the MPS Art Therapy Department explains, “In the exhibition, the student and client pieces are paired to convey the affiliation between the two and how each person develops and learns from the other. This is a great opportunity to see the interaction between students and clients and how both are represented here as artists.”
