May 1 - 28, 2010 Reception: Monday, May 10, 6 - 8pm
School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Carnival,” an exhibition of work by first-year MFA Design Department students, that explores contemporary social and political issues through the light-hearted lens of a carnival midway. The exhibition is curated by Kevin O’Callaghan.
Each of the 23 participating students has designed a booth that investigates an issue such as gender roles, deforestation or the policy on gay service in the U.S. Military. Projects include a landfill-inspired dunking booth, a balloon dart toss that addresses health care and a “freak show” that illustrates experiments conducted on animals.
The exhibition includes work by Thipchat Arthasarnprasit, Rosina Bosco, Dora Budor, Maja Cule, Ron Gabriel, Jennie Glaser, Wes Gott, Sam Katz, Lillian Lee, Jin Ah Min, Tyler Mintz, Nicole Pivirotto, Katie Positerry, Lydia Reynolds, Andrew Schaff, Chris Seabrooks, Andy Sir, Karin Soukup, Alexandra Stefanakova, Alexej Steinhardt, Jules Tardy, Cristina Vasquez and Lauren Wolff.
The MFA Design Department prepares students to excel as both form givers and “authors” of original concepts across a broad range of media. Building on fluency with the languages of graphic design and typography, the department focuses on the independent creation of ideas. With the aim of transforming designers into entrepreneurs, the program encourages students to think for themselves in creating objects of value to others, drawing inspiration from visual communication in the fine as well as applied arts.
