All databases and online resources on this page are for the use of SVA students, faculty, and staff only. These links may be accessed from any computer on campus.

ART & DESIGN

Art Full Text 1984-present
Offers broad coverage of art topics, including painting, photography, sculpture advertising art, art history, film, graphic arts, industrial design, interior design archaeology, architecture, decorative arts, folk art, textiles and more. Articles and reproductions of works of art are indexed. Citations are from 377 periodicals published throughout the world. Full text coverage is from 111 journals as far back as 1997.

Art Index Retrospective (1929-1984)
The same broad coverage as Art Index listed above, covering publications from 1929-1984.

ArtBibliographies Modern (1974-present)
Covers artists and movements from Impressionism in the late 19th century to the most recent works and trends. Photography is covered from its invention in 1839 to the present. Subjects cover all aspects of modern and contemporary art, including performance art and installation works, video art, computer and electronic art, body art, graffiti, artists' books, theater arts, crafts, jewelry and illustration, as well as the traditional fine arts of painting, printmaking, sculpture and drawing.

Design and Applied Arts Index (DAAI) (1973-present)
An international index to design and applied arts journals covering both new designers and the development of design and the applied arts since the mid-19th century, surveying disciplines including ceramics, glass, jewellery, wood, metalsmithing, graphic design, fashion and clothing, textiles, furniture, interior design, architecture, computer aided design, Web design, computer-generated graphics, animation, product design, industrial design, garden design, and landscape architecture.

Design Abstracts Retrospective (DAR) (1903-1986)
The same broad coverage as (DAAI) listed above, covering publications from (1903-1986) with some sources back to 1894.

Design ProFILES (DP)
A comprehensive collection of profiles in design and design-related fields providing information on more than 8,000 designers and design-related organizations that were influential in the 20th century world of design.

Oxford Art Online
The gateway into art research and the access point for Oxford art reference subscriptions and publications which include Grove Art Online, Oxford Companion to Western Art, Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.

Material Connexion
Resource of over 3,500 new and innovative materials representing eight categories: polymers, glass, ceramics, carbon-based materials, cement-based materials, metals, natural materials and natural material derivatives.

AskART
Database of international artists containing biographies, images, prices, and bibliographic sources.


IMAGES

AP Images
An online picture library of current and historical photos from the Associated Press. This constantly expanding archive of 700,000 images dates from 1844 to the present.

ARTstor
Documents artistic traditions across many time periods and cultures including architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design. Digital images come from museums, archaeological teams, photo archives, slide collections, and art reference publishers. The collection is nearing 500,000 images and continues to grow. ARTstor supports the needs of faculty, students and researchers in the arts and humanities and is provided through the courtesy of the Visual Arts Foundation.

Art Museum Image Gallery
Over 150,000 high resolution images from museums around the world covering contemporary art, Native American and Inuit art, to ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian works, along with Japanese and Chinese works.

Corbis Education
An educational spin-off of Corbis.com, a major provider of digital images. SVA's subscription provides access to the Design Collection & the Historical Collection. The Design Collection contains over 85,000 images and is available in both standard and high resolution. The Historical Collection is available in standard resolution and has approximately 400,000 images.

It is necessary to create your own account using SVA's subscription code. Please contact Amos Turner at the library for the code.

MDID allows users to search, retrieve, organize and teach with digital images and image data. All material in this collection is protected by copyright. Duplication and/or sale of all or any part of the collection is strictly prohibited. Material may be used for personal research use or educational purposes in electronic or print form.


HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES

Academic Search Premier (1975-present)
This multidiscipline database provides full text coverage of 4,600 journals covering nearly all academic areas of study. 8,200 more journals are indexed and abstracted.

JSTOR
A full text scholarly database of 150 titles focused on the arts and humanities. The Arts & Sciences III collection includes articles from journals on the history and study of art and architecture, film studies, language and literature, music, folklore, performing arts, and religion.

Literature Criticism Online
Full-text articles, critical essays and reviews from over 300 scholarly journals and literary magazines covering the 19th and 20th centuries.

Film & Television Literature Index
Provides cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for more than 300 publications, and selected coverage of 300 more.

American Film Scripts Online
Access to more than 500 scripts including such classics as Lady from Shanghai, Raging Bull and Hotel Rwanda. Coverage extends back to the earliest silent films.

ERIC
ERIC, the Educational Resource Information Center database of the U.S. Department of Education, contains citations and abstracts from over 980 educational and education-related journals, as well as full text of more than 2,200 digests.


GENERAL REFERENCE

Ebrary Technology and Computer E-books Collection
Access to over 2,000 computer and technology e-books on topics such as gaming, hardware and software manuals, programming, Web 2.0, etc. The e-books are viewable with the ebrary Reader. The Reader allows numerous ways of navigating through the books as well as enables highlights, notes and bookmarks. In addition, text can be printed or copied with automatic citations. The ebrary Reader has been installed on most campus computers. Off-site users can quickly and easily download and install the ebrary Reader from here.

MasterFILE Premier
Covering subject areas of general interest, MasterFILE Premier provides full text for nearly 1,750 periodicals as far back as 1975, nearly 500 full text reference books, full text from 86,017 biographies, 105,786 full text primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 341,655 photos, maps and flags.

TOPICsearch
This current events database allows researchers to explore social, political and economic issues, scientific discoveries and other popular topics providing full text coverage of over 64,000 articles from more than 3,000 diverse sources including international and regional newspapers, periodicals, biographies, public opinion polls, book reviews, pamphlets, and government information.

Britannica Online
Includes the complete encyclopedia, as well as photos, illustrations, animation, video and sound clips. Also includes recent editions of Britannica Book of the Year and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.

Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia
This encyclopedia indexes over 25,000 records, covering an array of topics. The database contains various images, offers brief biographies as well as information in a variety of subject areas.

Merriam Webster's Third New International Dictionary
Online access to the largest, most comprehensive American dictionary. Over 476,000 entries 3,000 illustrations and 140,000 etymologies describing word origins.


NEWSPAPERS

ProQuest Historical New York Times (1851-2004)
The database covers The New York Times from its first issue in 1851 through 2004 and includes the complete paper?cover-to-cover?with full-page and article images in downloadable PDF. Photos and advertisements are included.

Newspaper Source
Provides cover-to-cover full text for over 200 national and international newspapers as well as full text television and radio news transcripts.

InfoTrac Custom Newspapers
Full text access to over 95 major regional, national and international newspapers.

New York State Newspapers
Search this database for full text access to ten major newspapers published in the state of New York, including the New York Times and the New York Post.

National Newspaper Index
Indexes articles from 5 top newspapers-New York Times (including the NYT Book Review and the NYT Magazine), Wall Street Journal (Eastern and Western editions), Washington Post, Los Angeles Times.

!Informe!
Provides access to full text articles from Spanish-language and bilingual periodicals.

Biography Reference Bank
Containing more than 300,000 in-depth profiles, this database provides one-stop access to numerous biography sources covering individuals throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas.


ADVERTISING

Advertising Red Books
Provides the information necessary for thorough advertising research on agencies and advertisers. Contains detailed profiles of nearly 13,500 U.S. and international advertising agencies, including accounts represented by each agency, fields of specialization, breakdown of gross billings by media, and contact information on agency personnel.

Business and Company Resource Center (1980-present)
Search this database to find detailed company and industry news and information.

Business Source Premier (1965- present)
Provides full text coverage of 8,800 scholarly business, management and economics journals including substantial company profiles and industry reports.


HEALTH

Health Reference Center Academic
Use this database to find articles on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Alcohol and Drug abuse, HMOs, Prescription Drugs, etc.

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition
Covers nearly 600 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines.

MEDLINE
Provides authoritative information on all aspects of medicine.
