The Computer Art department offers comprehensive instruction in 3D Computer Animation, Broadcast Design, Compositing and Visual Effects. There are electives each year in computer programming and scripting, game design, interactive media and installation art.
Computer Art majors learn the most advanced digital applications from the more than sixty working professionals who make-up our faculty each semester. Students develop both the personal and professional skills required to succeed as visual artists and they learn how to stand out in a highly competitive creative industry.
Computer Art majors receive a strong working knowledge in both 2D and 3D computer graphics. The ability to integrate computer-generated images with live action footage is a hallmark of our program. We also encourage collaboration from student to student, department to department. The skills and the ability to work in a team make Computer Art graduates uniquely prepared to contribute in film, television, commercial and video-game productions. Our investment in technology is impressive and ongoing. A professional sound room and a dedicated green-screen studio with High Definition video capture highlight are two recent additions to the Computer Art facility. The nearly two hundred Apple and eighty Boxx Technology computers provide the power for the nine classrooms and four production labs. A fiber network allows near instant transfer of massive digital files from production labs on the second and third floors of the Computer Art department. While technology is a driving force in this department, every project begins with a pencil and paper. Drawing, painting and story development are essential aspects of the curriculum. Computer Art majors are encouraged to take non-computer art studio electives from the many outstanding programs at SVA.
Finally and most importantly, Computer Art is a production-based curriculum. Students produce portfolio quality work every semester, each year. During the junior and senior years, students receive specialized instruction that ensures they master both the techniques and the craft required to produce their final Thesis Project.
